Jim Parham has been riding bikes on the roads and trails around his home in the Great Smoky Mountains since the late 1980s. His book, Off The Beaten Track: A Guide to Mountain Biking in Western North Carolina was the first mountain bike trail guide for the entire southeastern U.S. After its initial publication in 1991, he went on to write five more mountain bike guides to areas from north Georgia to West Virginia, as well as road biking guides for western North Carolina and north Georgia. He was North Carolina's first representative to the International Mountain Biking Association (IMBA) and helped build several trail loops at the infamous Tsali Recreation Areajust down the road from his home. In addition to his books, he has written numerous articles for regional and national publications. Still an avid cyclist, he continues to be active in cycling advocacy.
