April 5, 2006 Foundation focuses on motorcycle safety Smoky Mountain News ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation is showcasing a series of Motorcycle Adventures guidebooks for consumers as part of an effort to increase awareness of motorcycle safety on the Blue Ridge Parkway. The March edition of e-BRPN, the Foundation's electronic newsletter, notes that warmer spring weather brings an increase of motorcycle use on the Parkway, one of the premier riding destinations in the United States. To meet the demand and to promote the best advice, the article states, it is showcasing a three-volume Motorcycle Adventures series, which covers nearly all of the Blue Ridge Parkway - from Cherokee north to where the Parkway meets the Skyline Drive in Virginia. "The Blue Ridge Parkway has promoted vigorously a motorcycle safety program to increase awareness about the treacherous, descending radius curves which are the highest accident areas on the 469-mile motor road," the article states. The motorcycle guidebooks, written by former metro-Atlanta motorcycle police Sgt. Hawk Hagebak, are already bestsellers in the genre. "If there was a New York Times bestseller list for motorcycle books, Hawk's guides would at the top," said Nick Salvia, parts manager for BMW-Ducati Motorcycles in Charlotte, where the guides have been sold since 2001. The guides provide maps, clear directions, and highlights for the motorcycle routes covered, but they also include the author's "Code of the Road," which covers motorcycle safety and etiquette. Hagebak makes a point to include safety tips specific to the Parkway. For example, when riding through tunnels, he warns riders that car and RV drivers have a tendency to creep over the centerline. "The prevention for this recipe for disaster is simple - keep to the right half of your lane as you enter the tunnel," he states. The Blue Ridge Parkway store is bundling the three-volume Motorcycle Adventures set for special retail sales at its on-line store at www.blueridgeparkwaystore.org The guides are also available at selected motorcycle shops and bookstores.
